Distance Learning Resources

Course Listing

The Distance Learning Course listing provides an overall display of distance learning and online courses offered throughout the UH system. Students can search for courses by semester, campus, instructional method or course. By clicking on the title of the course, students can find additional information about that course (i.e., CRN, credits, grading, instructor, course dates, meeting times, and notes).

DL Programs

There are over 40 fully online programs throughout the University of Hawaiʻi System. Information on each program can be found on the Fully Online Program page. For each program, students can find out the degree awarded, offering campus, program description, link to the program website, entry date, total credit hours, where the program is available, course format, sample schedule, if there is a required residency component, and program contact information.

Distance Learning Student Guides

The University of Hawaiʻi System offer courses in three delivery modes - cable, interactive video (ITV), and online. The following guides will provide students information and tips on how to succeed.

Cable Student Guide

Cable allows students to take cable courses in the convenience of their home. Courses are either live or pre-recorded. In most cable courses, there will be an online component for outside class communication, material distribution and assignments.

ITV Student Guide

ITV allows connection between one or more remote campuses, allowing students from across the state to access courses not available on the UH campus in their county. Class meetings are held at a specific time and place (synchronous). Both instructor and students can see and hear each other, simulating a face-to-face class environment. In most ITV courses, there will be an online component for outside class communication, material distribution and assignments.

Online Student Guide

The Internet allows students to take a course from anywhere using a personal computer or mobile device. Depending on the online course, students may be required to log in at a specific day and time (synchronous) or at any time (asynchronous).

Orientation to Online Learning

UH Online would like to offer an opportunity that might be of interest to you - a free online learning orientation. We are excited for you to join our 'ohana and want to prepare you with the necessary skills to be a successful online student. This orientation provides you with a preview of an online class so that you can become familiar with distance learning through the University of Hawaiʻi. The readings, videos, and activities are all designed to explain the basics of online learning. You will also learn about expectations, self-management strategies, features of Laulima, and connecting with campus and system resources.

The orientation usually takes students between 1-2 hours to complete depending on your comfort level with technology and reading speed. You can access the orientation content 24/7 at your own convenience. It is highly suggested you complete the orientation before taking your first online course.
