Description

The MEd in Counseling with a concentration in School Counseling is an online program that prepares candidates to work with students PreK-12. Candidates will develop comprehensive knowledge of the counseling profession, including its history, structure, and theories. They will learn to apply evidence-based strategies tailored to students' diverse needs, utilize multiple data points for assessment, and implement comprehensive programs prioritizing equity and cultural competence.

The program emphasizes the development of skills in collecting and communicating outcome measures, conducting ethical and culturally responsive services, and maintaining high professional standards. School counseling candidates will learn to advocate for students, promote human development, and collaborate with families and agencies to foster systemic change and quality services.

Through a combination of rigorous online coursework, supervised practicum, and internship experiences, students will gain the knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary to address the academic, career, and social/emotional needs of all students. This online format offers flexibility for working professionals while ensuring thorough preparation for a career in school counseling. Graduates will be equipped to design and implement data-informed, equitable school counseling programs that promote student success and well-being in diverse educational settings.

Attendance Information

The MEd in School Counseling is a hybrid program with courses delivered online, featuring synchronous class sessions typically held in the early evenings, from 4:30pm to 7:00 pm Hawaiʻi Standard Time (HST). This format allows for real-time interaction with faculty and peers while providing the flexibility of distance learning. Additionally, students are also required to complete in-person practicum and internships at Hawaiʻi school sites. Students are also required to attend in-person full-day sessions at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa twice each year, typically on Saturdays. These on-campus sessions provide valuable face-to-face interaction and networking opportunities.
