Student Guide to Learning Online

Learning Tools

Your faculty are preparing to teach using a learning management system and a videoconferencing system. Familiarizing yourself with these tools will help provide a smooth transition when classes begin.

Laulima

Laulima is the official University of Hawaiʻi learning management system. Most online courses in the UH system use Laulima for course content.

Lamakū

Lamakū (powered by D2l Brightspace) will be the University of Hawaiʻi's new learning management system, replacing Laulima.

  • UH Hilo and UH Community Colleges online courses will move to Lamakū beginning Spring 2025
  • UH Mānoa and UH West Oʻahu will begin moving to Lamakū in Summer 2025

Students registered in Lamakū courses in Fall 2024 (pilot courses only) and Spring 2025 may find Lamakū tutorials at the Lamakū Student Resources website.

Web Conferencing

Zoom is the University of Hawaiʻi web conferencing tool used for facilitating lectures online in either synchronous or asynchronous environments. Check with your instructor whether or not this tool will be used for your online class. If your course includes web conferencing, you will need a computer or mobile device with a camera and microphone capabilities. To join a class session, your instructor will give you a link either through email, a calendar invitation, or post in your Laulima course. Tutorial for Students

Here are some tips during a web conferencing session
  • Make sure you're muted when not talking
  • Be mindful of background noise and distractions around you
  • Be yourself and respect others
  • When on camera, adjust your camera and lighting so your classmates and instructor can see your face well.
  • When not on camera, add a profile photo to your Zoom account so your instructor and classmates can see your face.
  • Ask questions using the chat tool.
  • Use reactions to engage with your class
  • Utilize the raise your hand feature if wanting to ask a question live
