AI 2 Xcelerate (AI2X)
The AI 2 Xcelerate (AI2X) Program is an exciting, hands-on professional development (PD) program designed to support University of Hawaiʻi faculty and staff in integrating AI into their teaching, research, and/or professional activities. With customized focus areas tailored to each individual via proposed personalized action plans (PAPs), participants will gain hands-on AI experiences and collaboration opportunities through scheduled synchronous sessions in summer and fall, culminating in a spring showcase event. Explore trending generative AI tools and pedagogical approaches for higher education.
Engage in professional dialogue on the various implications of generative AI in higher education.
Critically reflect on the creative and productive use of AI, leveraging relevant AI standards and frameworks.
Implement the individual AI2X personalized action plan with a high-quality product that could be integrated into the UH Tenure, Promotion, and Contract Renewal (T/P) in alignment with the UH strategic plan.
Network, collaborate, and engage in the AI2X learning community to exchange ideas, share resources, and develop innovative strategies to increase UH’s impact on research, scholarship, and/or service.
AI2X Focus Areas
AI2X participants will develop and implement a personalized action plan with high-quality product(s) with one of the three focus areas listed below (aligned to the UH Tenure, Promotion, and Contract Renewal (T/P) Process). Hover or select each focus area for more information.
Teaching
Integrate AI into teaching practices through innovative course design, instructional strategies, and meaningful learning experiences that significantly enhance student engagement and achievement. Demonstrate a commitment to pedagogical innovation and the meaningful impact of AI in education.
Research
Integrate AI into research through innovative methodologies, AI-informed approaches, and peer-reviewed dissemination that advance discovery and disciplinary knowledge. Demonstrate a commitment to research innovation and the impactful integration of AI within their fields.
Professional Activities
Integrate AI through service, outreach, or professional activities that positively influence their institution, community, and broader professional networks. Demonstrate a commitment to professional growth, collaborative engagement, and the impactful application of AI with a broader community impact.

Program Schedule
Phase 1: Pre-Program Preparation
May 1 – 30, 2025
- Submit a Personalized Action Plan draft.
- Meet with PD facilitators in May for 1:1 consultation.
Phase 2: AI2X Synchronous Sessions
Monday-Friday, June 16 – 20, 2025
- Attend required synchronous sessions (9–11:30 a.m. with the last 30-min being Q&A/Open Lab).
- Actively participate in interactive and hands-on activities.
- Complete milestone activities in the AI2X Synchronous Sessions portion of your Personalized Action Plan.
Phase 3: Engage & Implement
Sep. 2025 – May 2026
- Complete and implement the remaining goals and milestones of your Personalized Action Plan; stay connected with the community.
- Engage in monthly sync. sessions with cohort peers.
Share highlights, successes, and experiences at the AI2X showcase.
Upon successful completion of the AI2X PD Program, participants will receive a 1-year Google AI Pro for Education site license ($200+ value) for access to Google’s most advanced models and tools.
AI2X Badge Pathway
The AI2X program provides a structured badge pathway that formally recognizes participants’ sustained engagement with AI integration across teaching, research, and professional activities.
Participants begin working toward the foundational AI Explorer badge, followed by choosing a focus area in Phase 2. These badges are awarded upon the successful completion of the respective criteria for each badge.
Participants who earn both badges and fulfill all program requirements will receive the culminating AI 2 Xcelerate badge, which serves as a formal recognition of their achievements in the program.
