UH Online Quality Course Design Review
To further strengthen the quality of online courses across the UH system, the UH Online Quality Course Design Review, an online standards-based review process, provides the opportunity for instructors to submit their already-developed online course for review in order to improve their course design while receiving 1-on-1 instructional design support.
Upon the completion of this process, instructors will receive a digital badge that recognizes course design meeting the quality standards, which is based on the Quality Matters nationally recognized rubrics.
Note: This process focuses on continuous improvement of effective online course design and is not meant to be an evaluation of online instruction.

The UH Online Quality Course Design Review Process
- STEP 1: Complete the Preparing to Teach Online at UH module, including all activities, assignments, and submission of course map for the course you plan to submit for course design review. In addition to ensuring all course design review applicants will have the same foundational components and best practices, this online module will take you through creation of a course map to support your course design and development and help align your course components to learning objectives. Don’t forget to review and implement any course map feedback before submitting your course for review.
- STEP 2: Courses that are being submitted for review should be fully designed and developed (e.g., all learning materials, learning activities, and assessments are written and course ready to enroll students). Laulima is the University of Hawai’i’s supported learning management system (LMS). It is strongly recommended that the course you submit is built-in Laulima, as the course design reviewers may not be familiar with other LMSes. You can request the UHOIC Laulima template for your course by submitting the Laulima Template Import Request form. The Laulima template incorporates best practices, accessibility, and navigational consistency.
- STEP 3: Submit the UH Online Quality Course Design Review Request Form to start the review process.
- STEP 4: Complete the UH Online Quality Course Design Review Process by revising your course based on feedback recommended by the reviewer.

Courses that are submitted should be complete, include a course map, and housed within Laulima. For additional assistance with creating a course map, use the UH Online Course Map Template or obtain additional guidance through the Preparing to Teach Online at UH module.
