Equity through “Intentional” Course Design

Universal Design for Learning is a framework created to eliminate inequity barriers. How can we be strategic in our online course design to leverage UDL principles and create meaningful, flexible learning for all students? Using the Equity by Design book (and book club guide), we will be highlighting key points from chapters 5-6 and discussing ways to apply them to our online teaching, learning, and support. Don’t worry if you don’t have time to read the book, there will be something for everyone! Let’s collectively brainstorm ways that we can be “intentional” in designing for online students.

In preparation for the webinar, here are some options for you to review prior to joining the webinar:

Moderators:

  • Alice Swift (Multimedia Instructional Designer, UHOIC)
  • Thanh Truc Nguyen (Specialist, Curriculum Research & Development Group, College of Education, University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa)

Webinar Resources:

  • Webinar Recording (Youtube, 28:34)
  • Presentation & Collaboration File (Canva) – Note that this document is still a work in progress and we will continue to revise and add to our collaborative visual summary (Sketchnote pages) in the coming weeks. There was a lot of information to share and not enough time, so don’t forget to review the many additional resources shared on page 9-10!
  • Alternative Presentation Slides (Google Slides) – Content shared during the webinar was converted into a traditional presentation format. The sketchnote graphics from Canva will be inserted into this presentation once it has been finalized.
